Black Honey Beaded Necklace
The First of our Artisan group highlight is based out of the village of Hapur , India run by a quiet, gentle lady by the name of Afsana. At 22 she worked for an NGO in the area that was set up to help teach craft skills to women in the village so that they could work from home and be part of the earning structure for the family unit . Afsana and a few others were paired with a woman from Ukraine that taught them the art of loom weaving with beads. Traditional to Ukraine and Native American Jewelry, creating a space for design exploration. After her training her big challenge was to start setting up a structure to sell her work which meant travelling to other parts of India for craft fairs which was not looked upon fondly as a woman in a highly patriarchal village. Thankfully her father was one of the rare men in the community that supported her and she embarked on her first trip to Mumbai for a craft show and the rest they say is history . Now in her 50’s, Afsana currently employs 60 women from her community giving each of these woman a strong standing in their homes.
By purchasing this necklace you are part of a network of woman that use craft not just as a way to spread beautiful work across the world but also as a means to support themselves and their families. Each necklace is woven by hand and carry the love to you with which it was made.
Annahmol, Afsana and her team thank you!
