Shoma Vintage Kantha Jacket 33 (S)
As with all the textiles we work with, we pay homage to the area it originated thus naming this special one of a kind jacket "Shoma" which means beautiful in Bengali. The region where Kantha is said to have originated.
Kantha is traditional embroidery native to eastern South Asia, in particular Bangladesh and the neighbouring Indian states along the Bay of Bengal.
Historically, women in those regions have taken their discarded fabric scraps and sewn them together with a simple running stitch; taking the old and repurposing it into something useful and protective. Kantha, the fabric process this Jacket is made from was created originally for the most basic and practical purpose: to keep warm.
Kantha is woven with stories and wishes, giving its new recipients an opportunity to add a new chapter to its journey.
