Suzani is a traditional form of Central Asian embroidery. The word 'suzan' is derived from the Persian word for needle. The designs contain motifs that reflect this rite of passage, with symbols of fertility, fecundity, cosmology, and the tree of life amongst many others. A distinctive feature of the craftsmanship in the Bukhara region is the use of hook-work (also known as crochet) as a technique alongside the traditional neeedlework.This technique increases the clarity of the images in the design, adding volume and sharpness to the motifs. It also improves the quality of the embroidery itself, making it more durable and hard-wearing.
